Rolex watches, made by the Swiss company of the same name, are often used as a symbol of prestige and status. The brand is the largest manufacturer of luxury watches in the world, producing revenue of around $3 billion and with an estimated daily production of 2000 Rolex watches. The company has been a catalyst for many of the landmarks in watch development. The first waterproof watch was the Rolex Oyster, made in 1923, followed by the first waterproof watch case to be able to reach 330 feet made in 1953. Rolex watches were also the first with the ability to automatically change the date on the dial, since 1945, and later both the day and the date. In 1954, Rolex released a watch that could show two time zones at once. Rolex watches are sold under three lines: Oyster Perpetual, Professional and Cellini. The company also markets less expensive models under the brand name "Tudor." Tudor watches can be purchased in most countries but were dropped from the United States market in 2004. The brand played a major part in developing the quartz watches during the 1960s and early 1970s even though there are very few Rolex watches that use the quartz design and all are exclusive to the Oyster Perpetual line. Five years after the quartz developments first began, Rolex began the clean-slate movement that led to the Rolex Oysterquartz. Rolex also has specialist watches that are used for particular sports and activities. Rolex watches include the Rolex Submariner, Rolex Explorer and Rolex Explorer II; the latter two are used for negotiated harsh terrain and have been taken on Mount Everest expeditions. Famously, some members of the Hillary expedition, including Tenzing Norgay, used Rolex Oysters when climbing Everest to the altitude of 29,029 feet in 1953. Rolex has produced watches designed for diving including the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea Dweller. This model includes a helium release valve to free the built-up gas during decompression. Another, the Rolex Sea Dweller Deep-Sea Special, was strapped to the submarine when Jacques Piccard made his 35,814-foot dive in the Marina Trench in 1960. Their additional features make Rolex watches ideal for aviation purposes. The Rolex GMT Master was specially requested by Pan Am Airways who wanted a solution for pilots who were flying through multiple time zones. The company is now beginning to add ceramic bezels to some of their sports models. Rolex watches began to become very popular by the start of World War II. Many Royal Air Force pilots bought the watches as an alternative to the standard issue that were far lower in quality. However, the watches were seized from the officers who were sent to prisoner-of-war camps. The founder, Hans Wilsdor, on hearing this announced that he would replace all the watches and that the officers need not pay until after the war. This led in turn to popularity for the brand extending to the U.S. officers and, after the war, an American market began for Rolex watches. |
